Poll workers are essential for elections to run smoothly. National Volunteer Month can be a great opportunity to encourage people in your community to get involved in local elections by signing up to serve as poll workers!

EAC Standards Board Region 6 Meeting in Guam

On March 19 and 20, the EAC convened Standards Board members from the U.S. Territories: Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This meeting, hosted by the Guam Election Commission, was the first time all the territories had a dedicated meeting to discuss elections for the communities they serve.

Topics and training included communications, voter registration list maintenance, and emergency management. As part of the meeting the EAC provided on-site support and guidance regarding requirements, management, and financial audits for Help America Vote Act (HAVA) Election Security Grants to ensure compliance and transparency for how these funds are being used. Members also participated in discussions about the challenges they face as territories and shared ideas for how to better serve voters.

Commissioner Hovland said of the meeting, “I think the territories offered a very unique opportunity to compare, contrast and share, and I hope it is the first of many conversations. I look forward to building from this conversation and fostering more community in the broader territory election community but also utilizing that to help election officials from around the country understand the challenges the territories face.” (Pacific Daily News

Recent EAC Workshops and Training

Over the past three months, the EAC has been on the road, leading workshops and training for more than 800 local election officials across five states. The workshops have focused on core election administration operations.

In March, EAC Senior Election Subject Matter Experts Ben Jackson and Ed Golembiewski, joined by EAC Chairman Donald Palmer, led a workshop on effective poll worker training during the New Jersey Association of Election Officials 88th Annual Conference. During the event, election officials engaged in deep discussions on the importance of poll worker training, how to educate adult learners, and strategies to build interactive elements into poll worker training programs.

Other recent and upcoming workshop topics include maintaining the chain of custody of election materials, communicating with the public about elections, and preparing for audits.

If you are interested in an EAC training or workshop during an upcoming event, please visit the EAC speaker request webpage for information on potential topics and how to submit a request.

How to Work with State Legislatures

Local election officials' experience and expertise can serve as essential resources for legislators; however, navigating the legislative process can be challenging.

The guide "How to Work with State Legislatures,” created by the NCSL and EAC in 2023, provides local election officials with strategies for engaging with legislators and understanding the legislative process. It outlines five key principles to assist local election officials, including understanding and participating in the legislative process, adopting an educational approach, fostering relationships, and communicating efficiently.

EAC/NCSL State Election Profiles

At the beginning of the year, the EAC, in collaboration with the National Council of State Legislatures (NCSL) revised our State Election Profiles. These one-page documents offer a comprehensive overview of state election policies in a standardized format with national comparison points for key election policies. They also list each state's chief election officials, directors, and local administrators, making them a valuable tool for communicating about election policy.
