"Democracy Heroes" Recruitment Campaign
The North Carolina Board of Elections forged community partnerships and capitalized on strong public interest to recruit more than 57,000 poll workers for the 2020 elections. The Board launched the “Democracy Heroes” campaign early in 2020 through a widely circulated online survey aimed at ensuring each county would have enough poll workers for the state’s 17-day early voting period and for Election Day. The campaign was very successful – not a single county reported a poll worker shortage and many registered long lists of reserves for future elections.
