EAC Commissioners Issue Joint Statement Marking National Voter Registration Day (NVRD)

Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) brings attention to the upcoming voter registration deadlines and efforts of state and local election officials to register voters across the country. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) passed a resolution in 2019 to recognize NVRD and join national efforts to support voter registration and election preparation. Chairman Ben Hovland and Commissioner Christy McCormick are members of the NVRD steering committee.

Chairman Hovland, Vice Chair Donald Palmer, Commissioner Thomas Hicks, and Commissioner McCormick issued the following joint statement marking September 17, 2024, as National Voter Registration Day (NVRD).

“National Voter Registration Day is an opportunity for Americans to prepare for the upcoming election by taking the crucial first step: registering to vote. With Election Day just around the corner and registration deadlines fast approaching, the EAC encourages voters to find out how they can register to vote and confirm their registration is up to date. If a voter has moved or changed their name since the last time they cast a ballot, updating their voter registration is critical to participating in the democratic process.

The EAC remains committed to supporting election officials who are working hard to process voter registration applications as they prepare for November. We urge all voters to get information on when and how to vote directly from the source—their state and local election offices.”

Voters can find links to their state and local election offices’ websites at eac.gov/vote.

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) was established by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). It is an independent, bipartisan commission charged with ensuring secure, accurate, and accessible elections by developing guidance to meet HAVA requirements, adopting voluntary voting system guidelines, and serving as a national clearinghouse of information on election administration. The EAC also accredits testing laboratories and certifies voting systems, as well as administers the use of HAVA funds. For more information, visit www.eac.gov.
